Vanessa

Time - 1 day, 2 days, 30 days.

MARRIED September 6, 1998 - I called my childhood friend during my visit to Oregon. "Can we meet at 10 at the Farmer's Market and do you still want to do the dress shoot?" Sure, she said.

She had forgotten all about it, so she just grabbed the dress (still in the box) on the way out the door to meet me. Over lattes, we talked about family, growing up, and the project.

"Should we photograph in the park? Sometimes I run there to train for the Portland Marathon."

Perfect. There we shot; in the park, in the rain, 1 day before her 11th anniversary, 2 days before her 40th birthday, and 1 month before her 1st marathon.

Whitney

Picnic.

MARRIED December 17, 2005 - Whitney called about taking family portraits when her son turned 6 months old. She brought the dress along on the shoot. It was all her idea to spread it out like a blanket. It was a great idea...the baby loved the silk against his skin.

Carrie

The dress used to be the most important thing in the box.

MARRIED September 27, 2003 - Carrie contacted me about meandmydress, "it's still in the box. My son will be 2 and loves to play in boxes. Sure enough, with a little convincing, it became a most agreeable garage for his toy buses.

Karen

...and now she runs marathons.

MARRIED 1998 - Karen called me about photographing her dress. "I've been training for the half-marathon; the dress might not fit." She put it on and instantly looked every bit the "iron" mommy - beautiful!

Elisa

On the day of her wedding, Elisa wanted the dress to fit perfectly…now, every day, it feels like it's getting smaller and smaller...and she couldn't be happier.

MARRIED OCTOBER 4, 2008 - She hadn't gotten the dress out since the wedding. She hadn't even had it cleaned. "It's filthy...that's hilarious."

She told me it was so much fun to "play dress-up" with the dress. It really seemed to be something from the past for her, but not locked away in a vault; it was okay to take it out and have fun with it. I originally photographed her in the dress 10 months before on her wedding day; her first child is due in 2 months, 2 days after her first anniversary.

Carolyn

The hat fit them all.

MARRIED MAY 10, 1996 - She got the dress out of storage; she had always been a dancer and it still fit. Try it on, I suggested. "It wasn't fitted to go over clothes." That was that. But it did fit her daughters.

She was pretty sure it was the only piece of custom, couture clothing she would ever own. She may not wear it much now, but the kids enjoyed the heck out of it.
